September Weather in Iceland
Many who have planned a trip to Iceland in September naturally wonder what kind of weather and temperatures they can expect, what with the summer winding down and all. September can be a great time to visit Iceland, as it is usually past the peak season.
Before we dive into what kind of September weather you can expect in Iceland, let us say that Icelands weather is notoriously capricious (changes often). Seriously, Iceland truly fits the old saying, If you dont like the weather, just wait a few minutes. It also depends on where in Iceland you will be. It can be rainy, cold and windy in Reykjavik and sunny and warm somewhere else. Keep in mind that Iceland is an island nation in the upper North Atlantic, and most of the country is just below the Arctic Circle.
Those details aside, this article is intended to provide you with averages. The warm season is generally between early June to early September with average daily high temperatures of 53°F (~11.6 Celsius) and an average seasonal high of 57°F (~13.9 Celsius). The average rainfall in September is a little under 3 inches or 71 mm, this represents an increase of rainfall, statistically-speaking, from the peak summer months. But any Icelander can tell you that this varies quite a bit, or at least it feels that way.
Mind you these are averages. Iceland can offer up spectacular days and when they come, they are amazing. And conversely, Iceland can serve up some pretty severe weather. In general, you can expect cool temperatures and light to moderate rainfall and shortening days which also means the start of the Northern lights season! So bring layers and some good walking shoes and enjoy the beginning of Fall in one of the worlds most beautiful and unique countries.
