Laugarvatn Fontana, Iceland’s Geothermal Wellness Spa

Magazine Laugarvatn Fontana, Iceland’s Geothermal Wellness Spa

Less than an hour’s drive from the capital city of Reykjavik, located in the middle of the famous Golden Circle, lies the small village of Laugarvatn.  And, on the shores of a lake with the same name, there is one of Iceland’s lesser-known gems, Laugarvatn Fontana hot springs spa and bath.

Laugarvatn Fontana offers steam saunas, geothermal wading pools and an oversized hot tub. All of the hot water and steam comes from natural hot springs. In fact, the steam saunas are built directly over one of the hot springs and the steam rises from the ground, through grates in the floor, offering guests a very unique hot springs experience.

The village of Laugarvatn has three natural hot springs, the most famous of which is called Vígðalaug. Legend has it that this hot spring has history going back over 1000 years, having been used as the site of mass baptisms when Iceland adopted Christianity.

More recently – going back to approximately 1929 - these hot springs were part of a spa that was enjoyed by visiting Icelanders as well as the children who attended the school that is located in this village.

But Laugarvatn Fontana is a brand new facility. Built in 2011, it offers its guests the full suite of modern conveniences:  showers, locker facilities, towel rentals, snack bar and, then of course there’s the  wonderful and relaxing saunas, pools and hot tub, all with views of beautiful Lake Laugarvatn which is also warmed by the three natural hot springs in the immediate area.  Put it all together and you’ll find that Laugarvatn Fontana offers a quintessential, and very rewarding, Iceland experience.

For guests staying at Berjaya Hotel Fludir, Laugarvatn Fontana is just a short drive away. Here’s a link for more information about this Iceland geothermal spa. Enjoy!
