Iceland's April Weather, Temperature & Length of Days

Magazine Iceland's April Weather, Temperature & Length of Days

April is another great time to visit Iceland. The temperatures are rising, the days are getting nice and long and the landscape is just starting to get green as all that sunlight works its magic on our flora and fauna, and maybe most importantly, Iceland's First day of Summer.  Now that we got you interested, here's what you can expect from the weather and length of days.

Daylight

In April, the amount of daylight you will get is substantial. Sunrise on April 1st in Iceland is at 6:46 AM and sunset is at 8:19 PM; that's 13 hours and 32 minutes of daylight.  By the end of April the length of day increases to 16 hours and 44 minutes, that is a gain of 3 hours and 12 minutes in one month! This is because Iceland, which is set at a high latitude, is gaining an average 6 minutes and 30 seconds of daylight every day.

Temperature

The month of April is characterized by continually rising temperatures - peaking into what we (the Icelanders) might even consider warm. As for the temperatures, you can expect the average low to be approximately -1.1 degrees Celsius (30 F), increasing to approximately 2.8 degrees Celsius (37 F) by the end of the month. The average high temperatures are 4.4 degrees Celsius (40 F), rising to 7 degrees Celsius (45 F) by the end of the month.  It iss even possible for the barometer to get into the low 50's F on a good day.  Doesn't sound too warm, but this is Iceland after all!

Precipitation

The average April rainfall in Reykjavik is approximately 58 mm (2.3 inches) in April, down substantially from March.  This precipitation will most likely come in the form of rain, but snow is still possible (I know, you are thinking didn't I just read first day of summer!) .  Statistically, you can expect approximately half the month of April to have some precipitation.

We recommend bringing lots of layers and some good waterproof shoes so you can enjoy whatever weather Iceland throws at you. We hope you enjoy your time in Iceland and highly recommend exploring our beautiful countryside if time permits.
