Iceland's February Weather, Temperature & Length of Days
February, the month of love and affection provide a unique romantic getaway for couples looking to warm up in each others arms under the beautiful northern lights of Iceland. There is much to do in Reykjavik this month as the capital offers a winter lights festival, a Sonar festival, as well as a food and fun event. Here is what you can expect out of the weather as you enjoy Iceland and maybe this month's events.
Daylight
As we steadily march deeper into the new year, we gain more and more sunlight. We start off February 1st with a sunrise at 10:08am and a sunset at approximately 5:15pm, radiating in a total of 7 hours and 6 minutes of daylight. The month of February adds about 6 and a half minutes of daylight every day, as we finally end the month with a sunrise at 8:39am and a sunset at about 6:43pm. Giving us a total of 10 hours and 3 minutes of daylight. Thus, we gain about 3 hours of daylight in February alone! The length of day is probably the biggest thing you'll notice in Iceland during this time of year.
Temperature
As for the temperatures, you can expect the average low to be approximately -2 degrees Celsius (28.4 F) and the average high temperatures at about 3 degrees Celsius (37.4 F) - probably not as cold as you thought. Iceland's temperatures are mitigated by the gulf stream, which brings relatively warm water up from lower latitudes. Without this, Iceland would be much colder. Many people who visit Iceland, experience much colder temperatures back home.
Precipitation
The chance of precipitation in the month of February is 78%, the highest throughout the year. Rainfall in Reykjavik is approximately 38.1mm (1.5 inches) in February. This precipitation can come in all forms, depending on temperatures. You may get snow, rain or sleet. Or, given Iceland's famously capricious weather, you could get rain, snow, sleet and blue skies all in one day! These averages aside, you can expect fairly windy conditions, persistent cloud cover and light precipitation in some form.
To sum it up, pack layers of clothing, as well as an enthusiastic partner so you can comfortably enjoy the many sights and festivities Iceland offers for a romantic escape in the month of February.
